What Is Chocobo Feed Used For?
Lots of things! See the list below:
Training Chocobos: All Chocobo feed will grant an experience point boost when used as a training reward for a Chocobo stabled in our Free Company estate. You can train your own Chocobo as well as other people's Chocobos this way.
Treat Your Chocobo in Battle: Apart from Krakka Roots which can only be used for training in the stables, other Chocobo feed can be used from your inventory when your Chocobo is out for battle to grant your companion a special buff.
Building a Preference: Your Chocobo can develop a preference for certain feed if you use it often during training, increasing that feed's effect when used as a treat in battle. Your Chocobo's preference is not affected when other players train it, only when you do. Once your Chocobo has developed a preference, it will keep it until you feed it enough of a different feed to change its preference. Krakka Roots do not affect preference.
Raising Your Chocobo's Level Cap: Once your Chocobo's rank reaches the maximum (10), it will no longer be able to receive EXP from battle or from training. Using a Thavnairian Onion as a training reward or as a battle treat will lift the cap for one more rank (indicated by a star for each rank cap increase next to your chocobo's rank), allowing your Chocobo to receive EXP once again. You will need a Thavnairian Onion to lift the cap for each rank past 10, up to 20. Using a Thavnairian Onion as a training reward or battle treat in other circumstances will have no effect whatsoever and should be avoided.
Why Pay For Chocobo Feed?
Seeds and topsoil are required to grow Chocobo feed and produce intercrossed varieties. In addition, Magicked Stable Brooms are required to maintain the condition of the stables. Krakka Root seeds can only be obtained by purchase from NPCs, and while topsoil and other seeds can be gathered or obtained from intercrossing, it would take a lot of time and luck from experienced high-level gatherers to obtain them in sufficient quantities, making these solutions impractical to maintain a high level of production. This is why we sometimes purchase the materials we need, carefully balancing the added costs against the time saved in order to make the best We need to be able to cover the cost of these purchases so that we can continue focusing on growing and intercrossing Chocobo feed for the benefit of the whole Company.
Why Are Some Types of Feed Free?
With the release of Patch 3.2, the Vath friendly beast tribe now offer varieties of Chocobo Feed typically obtained through intercrossing, that is: Sylkis Buds, Mimmet Gourds, Tantalplants and Pahsana Fruits. The Vath sell these for 348 Gil / piece. This is cheaper than we can ever hope to produce them. Rather than having our members spend more than they should for these items, or having the Company lose Gil in order to match the Vath NPC's prices, we have decided to stop production of these varieties and offer our remaining stocks for free. In the future, we may end up producing some of these as an intermediate step to intercrossing Thavnairian Onions. These off-products will be made available to our members for free as well.
Why Limit Quantities Per Transaction?
We are only able to produce limited quantities of Chocobo Feed at any given time. This is because plants take time to grow and our medium-size estate only allows a maximum of two gardens of 8 plots each. In order to produce intercrossed varieties, we first need to grow other stuff to get the seeds from intercrossing, then plant and grow these seeds, making it a much lengthier process than growing Krakka Roots. In order to give everyone a chance to purchase these items for their Chocobo, we're limiting the number of vegetables sold for each transaction. We will adjust these limits according to availability.
Why Control Thavnairian Onions So Much?
Thavnairian Onions are the most expensive brand of Chocobo Feed. Their use is a little more circumstantial than other types of feed and there has been many cases of accidental feeding when the Chocobo is not ready to rank up, resulting in the wasteful loss of the onion. Our solution to prevent this is to request that the Chocobo be stabled in order to examine its rank and exp. This allows us to determine whether the use of a Thavnairian Onion will be successful. Please see the post below for more information.

There has been some confusion regarding the correct method of using Thvnairian Onions to raise a Chocobo's level cap, which resulted in some wasteful uses of Thavnairian Onions. We understand that this is a frustrating situation with heavy financial consequences, but until Square Enix improves the rank up system, the best we can do is clarify the procedure to avoid further mistakes.
First off, please note that Thavnairian Onions do not directly raise your Chocobo's rank. They enable earning exp again towards the next rank. In order for this to work, your Chocobo must be at its maximum rank with 0 exp towards the next rank. Please see the diagram below, showing your Chocobo's experience display from the Companion menu, or the View Details menu at the Stables:
Please note that Gondwana is not responsible for misuse of Thavnairian Onions obtained through our Choco-Mart. We feel very sorry for our members who have lost large sums of gil in this manner and we hope further situations like this can be avoided.
Once you capped exp on your companion chocobo, go out in battle & kill a mob that yields exp for chocobo, it will get rank 10 and the barding will show up automticly in the companion "Equip" menu window.(if points been spent properly first)
